Brit. Bot. 182. 1929. [India] Many species of this genus are cultivated and/or have now escaped into páramo. [Paramo Checklist] Tagetes patula L. was treated as the lectotype by Rydberg [N. Amer. Fl. 34 (1915) 149]; see McNeill & al. [Taxon 36 (1987) 386]. However, under 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the St Louis Code (2000), this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5.b by Hitchc. & M.L. Green's choice [Prop. Brit. Bot. (1929) 182] of T. erecta. Grierson [in Dassan. & Fosberg, Rev. Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1 (1980) 234] indicated unspecified Clifford material (as type of E. erecta), failing to distinguish between two relevant sheets there. As they do not appear to be part of a single gathering, Art. 9.14 does not apply, and R.A. Howard's [Fl. Lesser Antilles 6 (1989) 601] choice of material in LINN as the type is accepted here (Linnaean Plant Names, May 21, 2003).
